Drumheller

Our new van, "Freedom" was ready for her first road trip! Drumheller, here we come! Leaving the mountains, we were quickly driving through the flatlands. You would never expect the valleys and crags to be hiding in the middle of prairie, suddenly you are winding down into a canyon where the town of Drumheller sits and the scenery suddenly changes.

First stop, The Royal Tyrell Museum. Lots of interesting displays and impressive fossils. Each fossil had an interesting story of how it was found and what they were able to find out about it. The one on the left was found by a father and son while on a fishing trip.

The beautiful crags and slowly developing hoodoos make for such a dynamic landscape. Both the above and image below were during the walk near the museum.

After the museum we headed to Horsethief Canyon. The Canyon got its name because horses used to enter the canyon with one owner and leave with another. Bandits would hide among the cliffs, kill the riders and take their horse.

Grabbed some wine and climbed into the canyon to shoot the sunset.

The next morning we went for a drive to the suspension bridge that was used during coal mining in the area. At first they used to use boats to transport both the workers and the coal, then they used a cable car for the coal and the workers used the bridge.

Stopped at the Hoodoos that were just off the road.

Went back to town for burgers at Bernie and the Boys, featured on "You Gotta Eat Here!" Really cool atmosphere, walk up counter and then they bring the food to your table. Had giant burgers and delicious marshmellow milkshakes! After lunch headed to Horseshoe Canyon for a hike.

Horseshoe Canyon

Found a huge collection of Inukshuks, usually they are meant to show the path is safe, but here there were hundreds.
Found this interesting rock in the canyon that looks like a skin impression.
I sent a photo to the Museum to see what they thought, they agreed!

We headed back into town to kill some time before dinner. We went for a few laps in go-karts, played mini golf and jumped on the bungee trampoline. Headed out for supper then headed back to Horseshoe Canyon to have a nap before sunrise.

Took a bunch of photos of sunrise over Horseshoe Canyon before heading back to Banff, work at noon!
